Shepherd Park is a thriving, friendly, diverse and historic neighborhood in the District of Columbia located in the northern “point” of DC — north of the former Walter Reed Army Medical Campus between Georgia Avenue and Rock Creek Park, and includes the neighborhoods also known as Colonial Village and North Portal Estates. Shepherd Park continues to enjoy a reputation for being a stable, integrated, and well-maintained neighborhood of single family detached and semi-detached houses on tree-lined streets. Just to the north is south South Silver Spring, a thriving area with an eclectic mix of old and new housing, wonderful shopping and dining, and a burgeoning arts scene.
Takoma Park/Takoma DC was the first commuter suburb in the DC area, originally straddling the line between DC and Maryland. While often called Takoma Park, the DC portion is simply called Takoma and the Maryland portion is called Takoma Park. Both Takoma Park and Takoma DC are now protected as U.S. Historic Districts with a variety of housing alternatives an eclectic downtown and one of the area’s best Farmer’s Markets (every Sunday, all year round). A mature neighborhood, Takoma is rich with diversity in ethnicity, religion and language. It is also the home of many writers, musicians and artists. The DC neighborhood contains a Metro station, a branch of the DC public library, and a recreation center with a pool, while the Maryland side boasts an all new community center with library, auditorium, and facilities for dance, art, game. Computes, teens, Seniors and more.
*Any student within commuting distance is welcome at any of the area day schools.
