The Friends of the Jewish Chapel (FOJC), a nonprofit organization, was established in 1994 to enhance the religious and cultural lives of the Jewish Midshipmen of the United States Naval Academy. Initially, that support came in the form of programming, as a dedicated Jewish Chapel was only a dream. In 1996, after recognizing the need for a facility dedicated to Jewish worship and ethics, visionary leaders proposed the creation of the Commodore Uriah P. Levy Center and Jewish Chapel. With approval in 1999 by the United Sates Naval Academy and the Secretary of the Navy, the Friends of the Jewish Chapel began raising funds for the design, construction, and equipping of the new facility.
