A Special Memoir Author Program & Workshop (Hybrid)

Monday, July 17, 1pm-2:30pm

Featuring Roni Rosenthal, Director of Judaic Studies and Professor of Language and Literature, University of Maryland (Baltimore County), and author

In December 2009 my father passed away. I went home for the funeral and found on my father’s desk an old family photo album, a handwritten family tree, and a note that read “Write their stories, tell the world what really happened to them.” And so, I did.

Where the Lilacs Bloom Once Again: Friddie’s Story is based on a true story and real historical events of Roni’s Jewish family in Romania, during WW2 and under the fascist-dictatorial regime that has been part of Romania for so many years. She wrote this book to tell their stories, to give the “silenced” stories a voice.

Many people want to tell their stories, but fear: “Who will even care about my story?” “It’s too much of an effort” and “How do I begin?” Every one of us has a voice that deserves to be heard, and we all yearn for someone to lend an ear. Crafting a memoir not only helps us connect with our roots, traditions, and relatives, but also assists us in comprehending our true selves better. Furthermore, it is a way to ensure that our life’s recollections are passed down through generations of our loved ones.
In this workshop, participants will learn how to begin their memoir journey and conduct family research.
