The Tova House is a sober living facility for Jewish women in early recovery from addiction. The Tova House can accommodate a maximum of 9 women comfortably in a converted home with three levels. There are five bedrooms, a full bathroom on two levels and a half bath on the first floor. Laundry facilities are located in the basement. The Tova House provides a warm, home-like environment with a large homey kitchen, dining room, a large living room area, and a deck for outdoor cooking and entertaining. The Tova House is located within Baltimore’s large Jewish community; is very close to the Jewish Community Center and Jewish Family Services, a full range of Jewish synagogues, temples and places for Jewish learning. Tova House is within blocks of public transportation routes that provide easy access to shopping centers, employment, training or education opportunities.
Jewish Recovery Houses, Inc. provides the residents of the Tova House with a Program Manager, who is on-site during the week and on-call 24/7 to counsel and help manage the residents’ recovery needs. Residents of Tova House are awake and dressed by 9:30 am and home for a curfew by 11:00 pm Monday through Friday. Each Tova House resident is assigned a weekly house chore to be completed on a daily basis. Residents must be employed or enrolled in school to remain a resident of the House. In all cases, a nominal rent of $125 per week is due in advance before each Monday. This rent is also used to help with costs of food, utilities, cable TV, Internet and other operating expenses. The total costs of operating the House of Hope is met through private donations since JRH does not solicit government funding.
Residents attend 12-step meetings outside of the House on a daily basis. The Tova House has a weekly house meeting attended by all the residents to discuss weekly events, challenges, concerns and suggestions with the Program Manager. The Tova House residents indicate their interests about new skills and monthly workshops are developed to provide the information in a casual, fun atmosphere. Community resources such as Jewish Addiction Services, Etz Chaim Jewish Learning Center, local secular and Jewish learning activities are made available and residents are encouraged to take advantage of all opportunities the Baltimore community has to offer. Once a month, Jewish Recovery House has a Shabbat Dinner at the House of Hope where the residents and alumni of the House of Hope and Tova House are joined by JRH Board members, staff and community members in a celebration of Sabbath peace made possible by freedom from addiction. We encourage the residents to invite their family and friends to join them. The Tova House is also the site of regular social activities for all the residents.
