Tara Publications was founded in Cedarhurst, LI in 1971 by Velvel Pasternak, a noted musicologist, The goal of the company was the publication, preservation and dissemination of the heritage of Jewish music.

The earliest publications were collections of Hasidic songs based on the recordings arranged and conducted by Pasternak. These were followed by Israeli, Yiddish, Klezmer, Choral, Cantorial and Instrumental music collections that today total over 100. In addition, Tara produced and distributed 50 audio recordings of Jewish music to the Judaica store trade.
