House of Hope

The House of Hope is a sober living facility for Jewish men in early recovery from addiction. The House of Hope can accommodate 17 men comfortably in a converted apartment building with three levels. There are eight bedrooms, five full bathrooms and laundry facilities on each level. There are two kitchens, one of which is kosher. There is a dining room, a large living room area, and a patio with a garden area. The House of Hope is located within Baltimore’s large Jewish community and is very close to the Jewish Community Center and Jewish Community Services. The House of Hope is also adjacent to shopping centers, employment opportunities, and public transportation routes.

Jewish Recovery Houses, Inc. provides the residents of the House of Hope with a Program Manager, who is on-site during the week and on-call 24/7 to counsel and help manage the residents’ recovery needs. Residents of House of Hope are awake and dressed by 9:30 am and home for a curfew by 11:00 pm Monday through Friday. Each House of Hope resident is assigned a weekly house chore to be completed on a daily basis. Residents must be employed or enrolled in school to remain a resident of the House. In all cases, a nominal rent of $125 per week is due in advance before each Monday. This rent is also used to help with costs of food, utilities, cable TV, Internet and other operating expenses. The total costs of operating the House of Hope is met through private donations and fundraising events and grants since JRH does not solicit government funding.

Residents attend 12-step meetings outside of the House on a daily basis. The House of Hope also has a house meeting once a week attended by all the residents, and a 12-step meeting on Sunday morning organized by House of Hope Alumni. The House of Hope residents are also involved with Jewish Addiction Services and encouraged to take advantage of all JAS has to offer. Once a month, the House of Hope has a Shabbat Dinner, with the residents of Tova House, JRH’s women’s recovery house. We encourage the residents to invite family, friends, and community associates. The House of Hope also plans regular social activities for all the residents.
