Jewish Federation of Greater Washington – Assistant Controller

Position Overview:
Working under the supervision of the Controller, the Assistant Controller is primarily responsible for controlling and managing the accounting, financial, maintenance and reporting functions of the Federation’s books and records. Our Assistant Controller must have knowledge of intermediate accounting principles including pertinent FASB pronouncements.  This individual must work in an accurate and timely manner with minimal supervision and take initiative in identifying anomalies and bringing them to the attention of the Controller and CFO.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Controls and manages all functional areas of accounting (including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable) and related database systems
  • Perform monthly financial closing procedures for Federation
  • Supervise accounting department staff
  • Prepares reports and surveys for external institutions or vendors
  • Trains staff and colleagues on all aspects of our computerized systems
  • Informs Controller of Finance of any changes in GAAP and works with auditors to understand how changes in policies might affect the organization
  • Ensures that all financial reports and techniques are clearly communicated to staff
  • Interface with donors as needed
  • Monthly reconciliation of various general ledger accounts
  • Prepares Federation audit schedules and interface with auditors
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Minimum BS Degree in accounting or another related field
  • Minimum 5-7 years experience in accounting department or another financial environment
  • Supervisory experience and ability to manage others
  • Experience with computerized financial systems
  • Customer service background helpful
  • Accuracy and attention to detail a must
  • Strong appreciation for the confidential nature of Federation work
