Inclusion Counselor

  • Engage and supervise the campers in programs and activities while under the position’s care.
  • Be present at arrival and dismissal locations as scheduled. Ensure all children have been picked up by an authorized adult or guardian.
  • Know how many participants are under the position’s care and know who and where they are at all times. Safely escort children to and from activities.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of campers of all ages, interact appropriately with campers in a variety of situations, appropriately model behavior and use positive behavior-management techniques – enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, good sportsmanship, and self-control.
  • Work with Leadership Team and co-counselors to plan activities that ensure the success of all campers.
  • Utilize active supervision at all times.
  • Creatively adapt and individualize activities to the specific needs of campers.
  • Clean equipment between uses. Take part in the daily clean-up of the program area, including putting all toys and equipment away.
  • Supervise in the pool with campers, assisting swim staff with their requests and needs, working hands-on with campers in the pool.
  • Understand and implement the behavior plan specific to the campers as needed.
  • Ensure that campers are brought to the health room daily for medications, and that appropriate medications are taken with group on any off-site activities.
  • Provide daily written communication with camper’s parents concerning campers’ daily progress and other pertinent information.
  • Effectively communicate with supervisor, staff and campers.
  • Provide written evaluations to the Inclusion Director about your campers’ experiences at Camp JCC at the end of the summer.
  • Comply with and participate in the County, State and American Camp Association requirements.
  • Recognize, respond to and report to Inclusion Director any environmental and/or other hazards related to the activity or the program.
  • Attend all required orientation meetings, staff meetings and trainings.


Other Responsibilities:

  • Foster the use of Jewish content in the curriculum.
  • Engage with participants of all ages (4-21).
  • Assist specialists and participate in activities.
  • Attend all orientation sessions, late stays, staff meetings, overnights, and trips planned for their group(s).
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as needed, required, or assigned.


Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

  • Physically assist campers in and out of the pool.
  • Assist campers with reapplying sunscreen.
  • Assist campers in the bathroom as needed.
  • Change soiled clothes as needed.
  • Have access to a device larger than a phone with reliable internet access for virtual orientation, meetings, and potential virtual programming.
  • Must be able to get on the floor to participate and supervise activities.
  • Must be able to spend the entirety of the 7-hour camp day outdoors, and walk and travel long distances.
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
  • Must be willing to wear a mask for the entirety of the 7-hour camp day.


Education and Experience:

  • CPR and First Aid certification preferred.
  • Experience working with children with disabilities preferred.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Must have the ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to camp activities.
  • Knowledge or experience with children with special needs is preferred.
  • Able to communicate clearly and effectively with children, parents and peers.
  • Able to support the other counselors in the Inclusion group.


Other Requirements:

  • Knowledge of, and respect for, the mission of the Bender JCC of Greater Washington.
  • Knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Bender JCC of Greater Washington, including its Personnel Handbook, and to abide by them.
  • Ability to effectively work in a team environment.
  • Communicate effectively with others, verbally and in writing.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as needed, required, or assigned.
