Temple Sinai, a vibrant Reform Jewish congregation, seeks an experienced Finance Manager to lead the organization’s finance and accounting operations, partner in the financial planning process, and work collaboratively across the organization to support the delivery of its mission and core values. This position is ideal for a finance professional who has non-profit experience, especially with places of worship, and a desire to support the vision of a spirited Jewish community.



Reporting to the Executive Director, the Finance Manager plays a key role in advancing Temple Sinai as a leading Jewish congregation in the Washington, DC area. With one direct report (full-time bookkeeping assistant), the Finance Manager helps to ensure the financial health and sustainability of the organization as it looks to strengthen and enrich its community.

Key Responsibilities

As Temple Sinai continues to grow and advance its mission, the Finance Manager performs a key role in serving the institution, including overseeing financial operations, maintaining the financial books and records of the Temple, updating and implementing internal control policies to safeguard assets, monitoring the investment portfolio, and working collaboratively as part of a larger staff team.  The Finance Manger is responsible for the following:

Accounting Leadership

  • Lead the overall daily accounting operations of the Temple, including restricted and unrestricted funds, and the Temple’s affiliates.
  • Ensure timeliness and accuracy of the general ledger and subsidiary records.
  • Perform monthly and year-end closings and account reconciliations.
  • Prepare monthly payroll.

Finance Management

  • Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports and forecasts for the Executive Director, Clergy, Board of Trustees, Committee chairs and auditors as appropriate.
  • Ensure successful cash management including preparing forecasts and recommending funding sources/transfers as appropriate.
  • Develop budgets and financial analyses.

Internal Controls, Policies & Procedures

  • Recommend and enforce internal controls to safeguard assets.
  • Ensure finance records and systems align with GAAP.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of the Temple’s accounting and subsidiary member software.
  • As new software may be selected, play a key role on implementation team for financial systems elements.
  • Implement asset capitalization policy; maintain records for amortization and depreciation of capital assets.
  • Oversee year-end audit, ACA compliance reporting, DC annual report filings.
  • Recommend and implement accounting department policies and procedures; provide accounting policy orientation

Temple Sinai uses a variety of tools in its finance team:  QuickBooks accounting software, Membership Management Services (MM2000), Paychex payroll services, and Microsoft Office tools including Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Skills and Attributes

  • Alignment with Temple Sinai’s values.
  • Minimum 5 years relevant experience in roles managing finance and accounting, nonprofit accounting preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively with team members and organization members/volunteers.
  • Detail-oriented and skilled at financial analyses and projections.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to communicate financial information to non-financial audiences.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, or Finance; or relevant nonprofit accounting experience. CPA, MBA, and/or MS in Finance or Accounting highly preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs; advanced Excel proficiency preferred.
  • Experience with QuickBooks or other online accounting systems and major payroll software; ability to learn software such as MM2000.
