When Avrom Landesman came to the Washington, D.C. area in 1962 with his wife Sarah and newborn son Uri, suburban Maryland was not a place most young Jewish families planned to settle long-term. The community had one day school that ran only through middle school, a single, distant mikvah, and few kosher establishments. Over the next decades, Avrom Landesman would be instrumental in changing that. It would be easier to list the institutions he hasn’t been central to building than those he has. His efforts helped develop not only Woodside Synagogue, but the Yeshiva of Greater Washington, the Mikvah Emunah Society and many more. Today, the Washington, D.C area has a thriving and established Orthodox community, in part because of the efforts of Avrom and his wife Sarah over more than fifty years. This year, Woodside Synagogue is proud to honor Rabbi Avrom Landesman and celebrate his contribution both to our shul and to the larger Jewish community.
