Join us for SHIN’s fifth annual event to raise consciousness of refugee crises worldwide. The Syrian refugee crisis is as dire as it’s ever been! The events in Syria have caused 6.7 million Syrians to become refugees and another 6.2 million to become internally displaced over the past several years. Now yet another 235,000 Syrians have been displaced since the middle of December due to a new regime offensive.

To honor what was once a diverse Syrian society, the concert will feature Lubana Al Quntar – Syria’s first opera star – singing in Aramaic / Syriac. Aramaic was used as a lingua franca in the Near East from the 6th century BCE. The concert will include pieces from the Syriac tradition, as well as the poetry of Rabbi Israel Ben Moses Najara.

This annual program is based on the long-running custom of many Syrian Jews to light an extra flame each night of Hanukkah to remember their being accepted as refugees in Aleppo after being forced out of Spain in the 15th century.

Receive updates about the crisis in Syria, hear the narratives of refugees who live in the DC area, connect to the various humanitarian ways we can help refugees locally and worldwide. Help us bring more light into 2020!

Concert followed by light Syrian-style refreshments.
