MAQAM OF THE WEEK CLASS – EVERY FRIDAY, 5:00-5:30PM EDT
(UNLESS ANNOUNCED OTHERWISE)
FIRST CLASS BEGINS JUNE 5TH (on Zoom)
‘Maqam’ means “place” or “location” in Arabic, similar to Hebrew ‘maqom’, bearing the same meaning. A maqam is a musical mode and maqamat (plural) characterize the classical Arabic, Persian, and Turkish arts of music. Take a musical journey from maqam to maqam, each week, with Asher Shasho-Levy.
The maqam colors the melodies of the Sabbath liturgy of Middle Eastern Jewish communities, according to the particular mood or theme of the perasha (Torah reading), each week. For example, maqam ‘rast’ (meaning “head” in Arabic) is employed for the beginning of the book of Genesis because it represents new beginnings. All lovers of musical expression and maqamat are welcome!
