AVI WEST MEMORIAL LECTURE
Join us to learn together in memory of our teacher and friend, Avi West, z”l.
Presented by Dr. David Arnow
Author of Creating Lively Passover Seders, Choosing Hope: The Heritage of Judaism, and co-editor of My People’s Passover Haggadah
The Exodus is Judaism’s master story of redemptive hope. This session will explore the question of who fulfills those hopes. Generally—but not exclusively—the Passover Haggadah depicts the fulfillment of these hopes as a result of divine actions. We’ll consider the Haggadah’s views on this matter, giving special attention to passages that subtly point to the human role in the redemptive process. We’ll then sample a variety of other rabbinic texts on the Exodus that highlight the kinds of actions we must take to realize our hopes. Given the urgent challenges we face today on so many fronts, these lessons are critical. The session will conclude with several suggestions for conversations at your Seder.
