Annual Daniel Mann Literary Luminary Lecture with speaker Michael Brenner.

Professor Michael Brenner of American University will draw on his recent book to discuss “The Changing Idea of a Jewish State: From Herzl to Netanyahu.” The lecture will analyze Ben-Gurion’s expressed aspiration for Israel “to be a light unto all other nations, and to be different from all the nations” and his conclusion that these aspirations are not contradictory, but rather “complementary and interdependent.” Michael Brenner is the Seymour and Lillian Abensohn Chair in Israel Studies and Director of AU’s Center for Israel Studies. He received his Ph.D. at Columbia University and taught previously at Indiana and Brandeis Universities. He is the International President of the Leo Baeck Institute and serves on many academic boards, including the Association for Israel Studies, the Israel Institute, the DAAD Center of the University of Haifa and is board chair of the Franz Rosenzweig Research Center of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

The event is co-sponsored by the Beth El Library, Men’s Club, and the Am Yisrael Chai Committee.
