The Ohr Kodesh Youth program is designed to meet the needs of all youth in the congregation. Youth have a chance to socialize, learn, and just have fun with other Jewish youth at Ohr Kodesh. Shabbat groups provide special activities every Shabbat morning for children of all ages. Similar age-appropriate groups are also held for major Jewish holidays and festivals. The youth program is directed by our full-time Youth and Family Program Director and a staff of carefully supervised group leaders with auxiliary parental support.
Youth Groups
Bonim, for pre-K though 2nd grade
Machar for grades 3-5
Kadima, for grades 6 through 8 introduces our youth to organized, community-wide Jewish youth groups. Nationally affiliated with United Synagogue Youth, the Kadima program stresses leadership development by helping the members design and plan their own social and religious activities and participate in service projects which may include other chapters from the Greater Washington area and as far away as the Tidewater area of Virginia. This group meets the requirement for youth group involvement for area day school students involved in Israel Quest.
USY, for our high-schoolers, meets at least twice a month and is nationally affiliated with United Synagogue Youth. With its own elected officers, the group plans social, community service and informal educational programs, often with USY groups from other synagogues in the area. Members who choose to do so have an opportunity to participate in frequent social and leadership development programs with groups within the Seaboard Region of United Synagogue (Maryland, Virginia, DC and North Carolina) and can attend regional and national conventions. Participation in USY satisfies the requirements for Israel Quest for day school students.
