Himmelfarb Mobile University, a program of JSSA (Jewish Social Service Agency) provides college-like classes to residents of nursing and retirement homes and participates in senior activity programs, strives to ease the isolation and improve the mental stimulation of residents of nursing and retirement homes, as well as participants in senior day programs and nutrition sites. Many of these seniors, because of physical limitations, cannot take advantage of learning opportunities in the community. HMU brings interesting learning opportunities to seniors where they live.
Created in 1989 under the sponsorship of the Paul and Annetta Himmelfarb foundation, through its more than 30 committed teachers Himmelfarb Mobile University has brought learning opportunities to more than 1,500 students annually at more than 100 sites. HMU offers classes in economics, political sciences, world history, foreign and urban affairs, as well as languages, cultural anthropology, sociology, performance art, music, poetry, art history, and additional topics. All classes are taught by volunteers ??? some are actively working in or retired from their fields of expertise ??? others teach about their hobbies or interests. The hour-long classes meet weekly at various locations in the metropolitan DC area and last from two to twelve weeks.
Teachers provide a class syllabus, maps, pictures, vocabulary sheets, slides and videotapes to engage participants and to encourage them to participate and incorporate their experiences into class discussions. For further information or to volunteer, call Rosa Weinstein at JSSA, 301-816-2630.
