Teen/Tween Coordinator: Tracy Schneidkraut

The JCC offers a wide variety of activities for Jewish teens in the greater DC area. Hang out in the JCC Teen Center after school, participate in a teen program on the weekend, do a mitzvah project, learn strategies from a professional college consultant about how to get into college, or take a Studyworks SAT class at the JCC. Specific teen programs, community service opportunities, college workshops, and SAT class dates can be found on the JCC’s website at www.jccgw.org.

The JCC Teen Center is a space just for teens in grades 6 through 12 to hang out. The Teen Center has a 60-inch big-screen TV with satellite service, a PlayStation2, a pool table, two foosball tables, pinball machines, air hockey, board games, and a ping pong table. You must be a member of The Zone after-school program or present a JCC family member ID, teen ID, or tween ID to use the Teen Center. Guest passes can be purchased from the Membership Office for $5. Come check it out for yourself! The Teen Center is open Monday through Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. On days when MCPS and JDS have early dismissal, the Teen Center will be open from 12 to 7 p.m.

Teens ages 13 to 18 years old or still in high school are eligible for a JCC Teen Membership. With this membership, they can use the Health & Fitness facilities, including the indoor and outdoor pools, weight equipment, newly-expanded exercise room, gymnasium, Bankshot??? basketball court, and racquetball and squash courts for just $250 a year. For more information, call the membership office at 301-348-3800.

The JCC Tween Membership is for students in 6th grade and up who are not yet 13 and eligible for the Teen Membership. Tween Members have access to the Teen Center, and they receive member rates for tween and teen programs. This one-year membership is only $75. For more information, call the membership office at 301-348-3800.

The Center is a great place for bar/bat mitzvah parties, special occasions and other tween and teen special events. A staff member can help create a party tailored to suit your needs and interests. For more information, call Nancy Carroll at 301-348-3710.

The Zone After-School Program provides after-school independence for students in grades 6 through 8 in a safe environment. The program is available Montgomery County Public Schools students (the JCC is a bus stop for Tilden Middle School students) and local Jewish day schools. The Zone is offered Monday through Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. During the winter months, The Zone is available beginning at 2:30 p.m. on Fridays to accommodate the early dismissal of JDS students. Students can choose to complete homework in the supervised study room, use the Health & Fitness facilities (if they are of age), or hang out in the Teen Center with a big screen TV, PlayStation 2, a pool table, computers, foosball, ping pong table, and pinball machines.

Make a difference in the world one day at a time by participating in unique community service projects with the Tween Mitzvah Corps. This is a great opportunity to socialize with friends while giving back to the community. Some projects will fulfill school community service requirements. Look in the Center Scene and on web site at www.jccgw.org, for details. To receive information regarding the Mitzvah Corps or to be added to the mailing list, call Joy Rosenthal at 301-348-3889.
