Baltimore Hebrew Institute

Baltimore Hebrew Institute, located in the College of Liberal Arts, has three main areas of focus:
supporting the growing Judaic studies degree programs and courses at Towson University
cultivating a vibrant, cohesive community for MA and PhD students in Judaic studies
providing adult learners with an array of continuing education course offerings, special programs and community lectures in Judaic studies. BHI is committed to supporting the education of Judaic scholars, educators, and communal professionals who exemplify excellence in their chosen fields. Students enrolled in TU’s Judaic Studies graduate programs have access to BHI’s need- and merit-based scholarship and fellowship opportunities. In addition, the BHI will focus on development to sustain and expand the extensive Judaic collection at the Albert Cook Library. Currently, Towson University offers three masters degree programs in Judaic Studies: Master of Arts in Jewish Studies (MAJS), Master of Arts in Jewish Communal Service (MAJCS), Master of Arts in Jewish Education (MAJE), Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Jewish Education, Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Jewish Communal Service. The Baltimore Hebrew Institute serves as a hub for TU’s Judaic Studies graduate students. By working closely with student representatives, BHI supports and promotes student life through a variety of special programs, social activities, and events jointly-sponsored with Hillel. Alumni of Baltimore Hebrew University are welcomed as Towson University alumni affiliated with the BHI. Inspired by the Jewish value of study for its own sake (Torah l’shma), the Institute hosts an array of Judaic studies programs, including continuing education classes, Hebrew language courses, scholarly lectures, and symposia in order to encourage literacy, dialogue and understanding for and among people of all traditions. In addition, the BHI serves as a bridge between Towson University and the broader community interested in higher Jewish education.
