Congregation B’nai Tzedek - Early Childhood Director

Congregation B’nai Tzedek, a dynamic Conservative synagogue of over 600 families in Potomac, Maryland, is seeking a full-time Director to lead its Laura & Joel Greenzaid Early Childhood Center (GECC). The Director will lead a school year program for children ages 15 months to 5 years, operating between 8:00AM and 4:00PM, and a summer camp program.

The GECC nurtures the physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and spiritual development of young children in a stimulating and developmentally appropriate environment.  The goal of our program is to encourage children to become independent, self-confident, inquisitive learners with a strong Jewish identity, using comprehensive secular and Judaic curricula.  We pride ourselves on the inclusivity of our program and the support we provide to all of our children and families.   

Our school‘s curriculum is play and inquiry-based. We utilize an emergent curriculum (Project Approach) to engage our students and our teachers in meaningful interest-based learning. Our school is inspired by the philosophy of the Reggio Emilia Infant Toddler Center and its image of the child, teacher, and the classroom environment.  Additional details about the GECC can be found at www.bnaitzedek.org/learn/greenzaid-ecc.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Development of Jewish and secular curriculum
  • Strategic planning for the Center’s programming
  • Developing, recruiting, hiring, supervising and training the educational staff
  • Fiscal management of the School
  • Marketing and communications, supported by other staff and volunteers
  • Recruiting students and students’ families
  • Responding to prospective GECC families
  • Responding to current GECC families
  • Engaging GECC families in the broader B’nai Tzedek community and its programs through collaboration with other staff and clergy
  • Periodic attendance and participation at B’nai Tzedek programs at night, on weekends, and during Jewish holidays when the GECC is typically closed
  • Ensuring compliance with all licensing requirements
  • Ensuring compliance with practices and reporting to create a safe environment for children, families, and staff
  • Serving as a liaison between the GECC and this population in the B’nai Tzedek community and in the local network of Early Childhood educators – Jewish and secular  
  • Participating in and contributing to B’nai Tzedek’s Senior Staff decision making
  • Developing programs for the GECC community which will serve them and also introduce the school and synagogue to non-member families 

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have at least five years of related experience
  • Demonstrate refined administrative and communication skills
  • Have a Bachelor’s degree at minimum, or a Masters’ Degree in Education/Early Childhood Development, or equivalent experience
  • Meet the Maryland State Department of Education qualifications to serve as a pre-school center director, or be able to obtain the qualifications within 6 months
  • Have a strong understanding of Conservative Jewish traditions, customs, and practice 

The Director reports to the Executive Director and coordinates closely with the Rabbi on curriculum development and ritual practices. This is a full-time exempt position. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2019.

The salary is $60,000 - $66,000, commensurate with experience. Benefits package includes health, dental and life insurance; 403(b) retirement plan; vacation; B’nai Tzedek membership; and other employee benefits.
