Bender JCC of Greater Washington - Junior Accountant
The Bender Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington has an opening in our Accounting Department for a Junior Accountant. This position reports to the Chief Financial Officer. The Bender JCC is located at 6125 Montrose Road in Rockville, MD. This premier community center is at the heart of Jewish life in Montgomery County, operating a full scale health and fitness center, pre-school, day camp and variety of education and arts programs.

Essential functions of the position:

  • Supervise the Deposit Clerk
  • Reconcile all balance sheet accounts (except cash accounts to bank statements) and various general ledger accounts to supporting audit schedules
  • Review for accuracy and post on a daily basis revenue batches imported from subsidiary database
  • Monitor and audit general ledger postings including revenue and expense accounts and prepare correcting journal entries as needed
  • Maintain the fixed assets records including physical inventory
  • Prepare journal entries as assigned
  • Review the on-line operating account for EFT and provide information to relevant data entry
  • Compile and maintain cash flow report
  • Serve as accounting department liaison for merchant services and related transactions
  • Handle charge-backs and customer disputes
  • Assist the Chief Financial Officer and the outside CPA Audit Firm in the audit of organization’s
    financial and programmatic operations, prepare audit schedules as assigned. 
Other responsibilities:
  • Assist the Chief Financial Officer in the coordination and preparation of the annual budget.
  • Serve as backup for monthly bank reconciliations
  • Assist with preparation of financial reporting and analysis
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
  • Keeps abreast of current trends, practices, and developments in the accounting profession.
  • Makes recommendations for implementation.
  • Working knowledge of and ability to abide by GAAP and IRS regulations
  • Minimum 3 - 5 years experience in accounting department or other financial environment with working knowledge of non-profit accounting
  • Experience with computerized financial systems and membership & fundraising databases
    required; prior experience with Sage: MIP is a plus
  • Customer service background helpful
  • Accuracy and attention to detail a must
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office with advanced Excel experience; accurately prepares automated
  • Experience in efficient, accurate and timely month-end closing 
  • Ability to complete multiple tasks within critical deadlines in a fast paced environment.
  • Ability to maintain highest degree of confidentiality.
  • Excellent organizational, problem solving and decision making skills.

Educational Degree(s), Professional Degree(s), or Certificate(s) Required:

  • Four-year college degree in accounting or related field and/or related work experience and
    continuing education.
Other Requirements:
  • Knowledge of, and respect for, the mission of the Jewish Community Center of Greater
  • Knowledge of the rules and regulations of the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington,
    including its Personnel Handbook, and to abide by them
  • Work in a team environment.
  • Communicate effectively with others, verbally and in writing
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as needed, required, or assigned
