I love the Olympics. Every two years, it feels like the world comes together in celebration of excellence and hard work. From the Opening Ceremony with the joyful Parade of Nations and emotional lighting of the Olympic torch through the many different competitions, it’s an exciting time! We are in the middle of the competition, and my family has been enthralled. Everyone has their favorite sports and athletes. If you want to watch all of the Jewish and Israeli athletes, here’s a list of their scheduled events.
We started enhancing the experience a few Olympiads ago by highlighting a different country’s cuisine each night. So farthis year, we have covered France, USA, Israel, Germany, Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, Spain, China, Greece, Mexico, Japan, and Thailand. We have many more to go! It’s been a tasty way to discuss the various countries and cultures and the influence of geography on cuisines.
The Olympics are also an opportunity to learn about the Jewish values of b’tzelem Elohim (“we are all created in God’s image”) and sh’mirat haguf (“guarding the body,” but generally used to talk about protecting your health and wellness). We root for the excellence of the competitors, regardless of their nationality, and know that exercise can lead to greater health. There are also the values of hard work and perseverance. Even when things do not go as planned — such as a favorite athlete losing or being injured — can be a teachable moment. There’s so much to take home from the Olympics, not just the gold!
Now back to kvelling (bursting with pride) over the athletes.
B’shalom (in peace),
Sarah
