Every year, my kids and I look forward to Shavuot (feast of weeks). Staying up late reading and eating ice cream has become a treasured tradition in our family.
Shavuot celebrates the receiving of the Torah at Mount Sinai and the first fruits of the late spring harvest. It is a holiday about food, setting up rules to live by, and reading — it is perfect for celebrating with kids! Some traditions include eating dairy foods (such as ice cream, cheesecake, blintzes, or other favorites), all-night study sessions (including the Book of Ruth), family hikes, and wearing flower crowns. Since it’s one of the three Jewish harvest festivals, you can also go berry picking to enjoy the summer harvest.
If you’d like to find an opportunity to celebrate with your Jewish community, please check our list of local events. To learn more about the holiday, visit the PJ Library Shavuot Holiday Hub. Shavuot starts on Tuesday, June 11th at sundown.
Chag Sameach (Happy Holiday),
