The Power of Community Events

The Power of Community Events blog post

In a time of social distancing, we can still come together to make a communal impact. Check out these three upcoming opportunities to make a difference and celebrate as a community.

  1. Federation’s Sara & Samuel Lessans Good Deeds Week, formerly Good Deeds Day, brings together more than 60 partners and thousands of volunteers for eight days of social action. From April 11th – 18th. Sign up for a variety of volunteer opportunities—at home virtually or in-person at small outdoor events—throughout DC, MD, and Northern Virginia to help address food insecurity in our region.
  2. Yom Ha’atzmaut (Israel’s Independence Day) starts April 14th at sundown, and you can celebrate Israel’s 73rd birthday through story times, outdoor gatherings, and more. We have ideas for at-home celebrations, too!
  3. Let’s count the Omer together! Starting on the second night of Passover, we count the 49 days (seven weeks) until Shavuot (the feast of weeks, starts May 16th this year). Last year, my family had fun creating the numbers out of items around the house and our neighborhood. This year, we want to hear the voices of our PJ families—join the fun by picking a number, creating it, and sending it to us to post to social media!

The power of our collective efforts and shared celebrations can create a ripple effect beyond our own homes, our own cities, our own community, and even our own country. I would love to hear how you are getting involved!

In this together,
